Hello! My name is Diocletian. I was born around the year 244 in a part of the Roman Empire called Dalmatia, which is now the country of Croatia. My family was not rich or famous, but I had big dreams. When I was old enough, I joined the Roman army. It was a tough life, but it was also a great adventure where I learned how to be a leader. I was a very good soldier and slowly moved up through the ranks. First, I became a commander of the cavalry, leading soldiers on horseback. Later, I earned the important job of being the head of the emperor's personal bodyguards. The Roman Empire during this time was going through a period called the Crisis of the Third Century. It was a very chaotic and difficult time, with many problems and leaders changing constantly.
My life changed forever in the year 284. The emperor I was serving, Numerian, died, and the army needed a strong new leader to guide the empire. The soldiers knew me and trusted me to be that leader. On November 20th, 284, they chose me to be the next Roman emperor. It was a huge honor, but it was also a huge responsibility. The empire was enormous, stretching across three continents, all the way from Britain to Syria. It was facing attacks from enemies on its borders and was struggling with many problems on the inside. I knew right away that one person couldn't possibly manage it all alone. I needed a new idea to save the empire.
My big idea was to share the job of being emperor. In 293, I created a system I called the Tetrarchy, which means 'rule by four.' I believed that four leaders working together would be much stronger than one leader working alone. I chose a trusted friend, Maximian, to be my co-emperor. We were both given the senior title 'Augustus.' I ruled the eastern half of the empire, and he ruled the western half. To help us, we each chose a junior emperor, called a 'Caesar.' My Caesar was a man named Galerius, and Maximian chose a man named Constantius. Together, the four of us helped defend the borders and govern all the different provinces. This new system worked very well, and for many years it helped bring peace and order back to the Roman Empire. We were able to push back our enemies and make the empire safer for everyone living in it.

After ruling for over twenty years, I felt that I had fixed many of the empire's biggest problems. I decided to do something no Roman emperor had ever done before. On May 1st, 305, I voluntarily retired from my position as emperor. I wanted to go home to Dalmatia and live a quiet, peaceful life. I had a magnificent palace built for myself right by the sea, in a place we now call Split. It was so large and strong that it was more like a fortress-city than a house! It had strong walls to keep it safe, grand halls for visitors, and beautiful gardens to walk in. A few years after I retired, some people tried to convince me to become emperor again. I refused. I famously told them that if they could see the wonderful cabbages I was growing with my own hands in my garden, they would understand why I preferred my peaceful new life.
My ideas, especially the Tetrarchy, helped stabilize the Roman Empire after a long and difficult time. I brought order and strength back when it was needed most. I lived to be about 67 years old, passing away in my palace in the year 311. Today, I am remembered as an emperor who was not afraid to try bold new solutions to solve big problems. And if you ever visit the city of Split in Croatia, you can still walk through the very streets and courtyards of the palace I built so long ago. It stands as a reminder of the power and grandeur of the Roman world I worked so hard to protect.
