Hello. My name is Diocletian. I lived in a big place called the Roman Empire. When I was a boy, I grew up to be a strong soldier in the army. I was very good at my job. In the year 284, I became the leader of all the soldiers. I was the emperor.
Being the emperor was a very, very big job. The Roman Empire was huge, with so many people and places to look after. It was too much work for just one person. So, I had a super idea. In the year 293, I asked three of my best friends to help me. We made a team of four leaders. Each of us took care of one part of the empire. This helped make sure everyone was safe and happy.
After many years of being a good emperor, I was ready for a rest. In the year 305, I built a giant, beautiful palace right next to the sea. It was my cozy home. I was the very first emperor to decide to retire from my job. I lived to be about 67 years old. People remember me for my clever idea of sharing the big job of being an emperor with good friends. It showed that working together can be a very good thing.
