The story

Pedro I: The Prince Who Loved Brazil

Hello. My name is Pedro. I was a prince from a country called Portugal. When I was a little boy, in the year 1807, I went on a big trip. I sailed on a boat across the big, blue ocean. We sailed and sailed for a very long time. We went to a new home called Brazil. Brazil was a beautiful land full of sunshine. There were so many colorful birds in the trees and lots of friendly people to meet.

I loved my new home in Brazil so much. I loved to ride my horse through the big green forests. I made many new friends, and we loved to play together. Brazil was a special place, but it was ruled by my father's kingdom, which was very far away. I thought a wonderful place like Brazil should be its own country. So, on a special day, September 7th, 1822, I made a very big choice. I decided to help Brazil become free.

When Brazil became its own country, the people were so happy. They cheered and smiled. They asked me to be their leader, and I said yes. I became the very first Emperor of Brazil. It was a very big job, but I was so proud. I loved Brazil, and I wanted to make sure everyone who lived there was happy and safe.

I lived to be 35 years old. Today, the people in Brazil remember me because I helped their home become the big, amazing country it is now. Sometimes, they call me 'the Liberator.' That is a special name that means I helped set Brazil free.
