The story

Edvard Munch: Painting My Feelings

Hello. My name is Edvard Munch, and I am an artist from a country called Norway. A long time ago, in the year 1863, I was born. Ever since I was a little boy, I loved to draw and paint more than anything. I would look at the trees, the sky, and the people around me. But I did not just want to paint what my eyes could see. I wanted to paint what I felt deep inside my heart. My paintings were special because they showed my feelings.

I used colors and shapes to show my big feelings. If I felt happy and full of joy, I would use bright, sunny colors like yellow and orange on my canvas. Those colors felt like a warm hug. If I felt sad or worried about something, I would use wavy lines and deep, dark colors like blue and gray. The wavy lines looked like a worried thought, and the dark colors showed a quiet, sad feeling. Art was my special way to talk about what was happening inside me without using any words. It was like a secret language made of paint.

My most famous painting is called 'The Scream'. It is a painting of a person having a very big, strong feeling under a swirly, colorful sky. It shows that sometimes feelings can be loud, even when you are quiet. I lived to be 80 years old. Today, my paintings are in big buildings called museums where people can see them. It makes me happy to know that my colors are still helping people look at art and think about their own feelings, too.
