The story

Elisha Graves Otis: The Elevator Inventor

Hello! My name is Elisha Graves Otis. I was born on August 3rd, 1811. When I was a little boy, I loved to build things. It was fun to see how machines worked. I was always tinkering with my tools to make things better.

Long ago, people were building taller and taller buildings. They used hoists to lift heavy things up high. A hoist is like a simple elevator. But everyone was scared. If the rope that pulled the hoist broke, everything would crash down! In 1852, I was working in a factory and had to move very heavy things. I thought, 'There must be a way to make this safe!'. So, I invented a special safety brake. It was like a pair of strong arms that would pop out and grab the sides if the rope ever broke.

People were not sure if my invention would really work. So, in 1854, I put on a big show in New York City. I stood on my elevator platform high in the air. Then, I told a man to cut the rope with an axe! The crowd gasped because they were scared. But I did not fall. My safety brake worked perfectly and stopped me. Everyone cheered because they saw I was safe.

My invention made people feel safe when they rode in elevators. Because of my work, we could build amazing tall buildings called skyscrapers. I lived to be 49 years old. Today, whenever you ride an elevator that goes up, up, up, you can remember my idea that helped cities reach for the sky.
