Ferdinand Magellan: A Trip Around the World
Hello! My name is Ferdinand Magellan. I was born in Portugal a very long time ago, around the year 1480. When I was a boy, I loved looking at maps and dreaming of faraway places. I would watch the big ships sail away from the port and imagine all the adventures they were having. I knew, even then, that I wanted to be an explorer and sail across the great, wide ocean.
In my time, everyone wanted to get to a special place called the Spice Islands. They had wonderful things like cinnamon and cloves! But the journey east was very long and dangerous. I had a bold idea: what if I could get there by sailing west instead? I believed the world was round, so I thought I could sail all the way around it! The king of my country, Portugal, didn't think it was a good idea. But I didn't give up! I went to Spain and told my plan to their king, Charles I. He liked my idea and in 1519, he gave me five ships to make the journey.
On September 20th, 1519, my adventure finally began! My five ships, the Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, and Santiago, sailed out of a harbor in Spain. I was the captain of the whole fleet, on my flagship, the Trinidad. We had over 200 sailors with us. The wind filled our sails, and we headed west across the giant Atlantic Ocean. We were all a little scared but very excited for what we might find.
Sailing wasn't easy. We faced huge storms that tossed our little wooden ships. It took us over a year, but in 1520, we finally found a secret passage at the very bottom of South America. It was a winding, tricky waterway that people now call the Strait of Magellan, after me! After we passed through, we came to a huge, calm ocean. It was so peaceful that I named it the Pacific Ocean, which means 'peaceful.' But this ocean was much bigger than anyone imagined, and we sailed for months without seeing land.
We finally reached a group of islands, now called the Philippines, in 1521. Sadly, my journey ended there, as I was killed during a battle. I was about 41 years old. But my crew and my dream sailed on! One of my ships, the Victoria, kept going west. In 1522, it made it all the way back to Spain, becoming the very first ship to sail all the way around the world! My expedition proved that the Earth is round, and it opened up a whole new map of the world for everyone to explore.
