Hello. My name is François. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1540. I lived in a beautiful place called France. When I was a little boy, I loved numbers and puzzles more than anything. I saw math patterns everywhere I looked. I saw them in the bright stars in the night sky and on the colorful wings of a butterfly. To me, the whole world was one big, exciting puzzle just waiting to be solved.
One day, I had a wonderful idea. I thought, 'What if we could use letters to stand in for numbers we don't know yet?'. It was like giving a number a secret nickname. We could use the letter 'A' or the letter 'B' in our math problems. This turned tricky problems into a fun game, and it made it much easier for everyone to find the answers. This was my special way to play with math and to help everyone understand it better.
My love for puzzles was very useful. I even helped the king by figuring out secret codes. It was like I was a math detective. I lived to be 63 years old, and I was so happy that I could share my ideas with the world. Today, when you see letters in your math lessons at school, you are using the fun game that I invented. That makes you a math detective, just like me.
