Hello! My name is François Viète. I was born in France a very long time ago, in the year 1540. When I was a boy, I loved solving all sorts of puzzles and playing games with numbers. Numbers were like my favorite toys. Even though I grew up and became a lawyer, which is someone who helps people with rules and laws, my heart always belonged to mathematics. I just couldn't stop thinking about all the fun and interesting things you could do with numbers.
I had a very important and exciting job. I worked for two different kings of France, King Henry III and later King Henry IV! During this time, our country, France, was in a war with Spain. The Spanish army sent secret messages to each other using a special code so that no one else could read them. My job was to be a codebreaker! It felt like I was solving the biggest and most important puzzle in the world. I studied the secret messages very carefully. After a lot of thinking, I figured out how to read their secret code! This helped the French kings understand the Spanish army's plans and protect our country.
Besides breaking codes for the kings, I spent a lot of my time thinking about math. One day, I had a big idea that changed math forever. I thought to myself, 'What if we used letters to stand for numbers in our math problems?' Before I had this idea, people had to write out very long sentences just to explain a single math problem. It was very confusing! I showed everyone that we could use letters like A, B, and C for numbers we already know, and letters like X and Y for the mystery numbers we are trying to find. This made math so much easier to write down and solve. In the year 1591, I wrote a special book about this new way of doing math, which we call algebra.

I lived to be 63 years old, and I was so happy that I could share my love of puzzles and math with the world. My big idea of using letters made solving very difficult problems much simpler for everyone. It was like giving people a new tool. This new tool helped other scientists and thinkers make amazing discoveries for hundreds of years. Today, when you are in school and learn algebra, you use letters in your math equations. When you do that, you are using the special language for math that I helped create a long, long time ago!
