The story

Frédéric Chopin: The Poet of the Piano

Hello! My name is Frédéric Chopin. I want to tell you my story, which is all about music. I was born in a small village in Poland called Żelazowa Wola on March 1st, 1810. My father was from France and my mother was from Poland, and our home was always filled with the beautiful sounds of music. I fell in love with the piano before I could even properly reach the keys. I spent hours at the instrument, and my parents saw that music was my special talent. By the time I was seven years old, in 1818, I was already giving my first public concert and writing my own little songs. It felt like the piano was a part of me, a way for me to share my feelings without using words.

As I grew, my family moved to the big city of Warsaw. It was a wonderful place full of new sights and sounds, but my real passion was always music. I studied hard at the Warsaw Conservatory, which is a special school for music, starting in 1826. My teacher, Józef Elsner, saw something special in me and encouraged me to follow my own path. I also loved to travel to the countryside and listen to the Polish folk music the local people played. The melodies were so beautiful and heartfelt that I decided to weave them into my own compositions. This is why some of my pieces, like my mazurkas and polonaises, sound so uniquely Polish. Warsaw was my home, and its spirit filled my music, but I knew I had to see more of the world to share my art.

In 1831, when I was 21 years old, I moved to Paris, France. What a city! It was bustling with artists, writers, and other musicians, and it quickly became my new home. I discovered that I didn't enjoy playing in huge, crowded concert halls. I felt my music was more personal, so I preferred to play in smaller gatherings in beautiful salons, which were like large living rooms. There, I could share my music with friends in a more intimate way. People started calling me the 'poet of the piano' because they said my music told stories and painted pictures with sound. During my years in Paris, I composed most of the music I am remembered for today—my nocturnes, which sound like the quiet of the night, and my exciting ballades. I also met a famous writer named George Sand, and we shared many creative years together.

I had been frail and often sick for much of my life, and my health grew worse over the years. I composed my last piece of music in 1849. I lived to be 39 years old, but my music has lived on for much, much longer. Even though I spent half my life in France, my heart always belonged to my home country of Poland. Today, people all over the world still play and listen to my piano pieces, feeling the joy, sadness, and love that I poured into every single note. I hope my music continues to tell stories for many years to come.
