The story

Frederick II: The Wonder of the World

Hello! My name is Frederick, and I was a very special kind of ruler called a Holy Roman Emperor a long, long time ago. I was born on December 26th, 1194, in a town called Jesi in Italy. My parents were Emperor Henry VI and Empress Constance. A very sad thing happened when I was little—both of my parents passed away. I became a king when I was only three years old! It was a big job for a little boy, but I had a lot of people to help me learn.

Even though I was a king, my favorite thing to do was learn. I was so curious about everything! I learned to speak six different languages so I could talk to people from all over my kingdom. People started calling me 'Stupor Mundi,' which means 'Wonder of the World,' because I was so interested in science, poetry, and art. I especially loved animals. I had a huge collection of amazing creatures, including lions, leopards, and even a giraffe!

My favorite animals of all were my birds, especially my falcons. I spent many years watching them, studying how they flew, hunted, and built their nests. I learned so much that I wrote a book all about them! It was called 'The Art of Hunting with Birds.' It wasn't just about hunting; it was one of the very first books to look at birds like a real scientist, describing everything about them in great detail. I wanted everyone to see how amazing these creatures were.

Being a good ruler meant more than just learning. I wanted to help my people learn, too. In the year 1224, I started a special school called the University of Naples. It was one of the first universities in the world where anyone could come to study and become a doctor, a lawyer, or a scholar. I also built many strong and beautiful castles all over my lands. One of my most famous is a castle shaped like a crown, called Castel del Monte.

Many kings in my time went to a faraway land to fight in wars called Crusades. When it was my turn to go in 1228, I decided to do something different. Instead of fighting, I talked to the other ruler, Sultan Al-Kamil. We made an agreement of peace in 1229, and I became the king of Jerusalem without a single battle. I believed that talking and understanding each other was much better than fighting.

I lived to be 55 years old, and my life was full of adventure and learning. Today, people remember me as a curious emperor who loved science, art, and animals, and who believed that knowledge could make the world a better place.
