The story

Frederick II: The Wonder of the World

Hello! My name is Frederick, and I was a king, and later an emperor, a very long time ago. I was born on December 26th, 1194, in a town called Jesi in Italy. My parents were Emperor Henry VI and Empress Constance. Sadly, they both passed away when I was just a little boy, and by 1198, I was an orphan. I grew up in a place called Sicily, an island full of sunshine, amazing buildings, and people from all over the world. Even though I was a king, I was also a curious boy who loved learning about all the different cultures around me.

Growing up wasn't always easy, and I had to prove I was strong enough to rule. I spent many years learning and preparing. Finally, in the year 1220, on November 22nd, I traveled to the great city of Rome. There, the Pope placed a crown on my head, and I officially became the Holy Roman Emperor! It was a very big job. It meant I was the ruler of a huge area that included parts of modern-day Germany, Italy, and many other lands. I knew I wanted to be a different kind of emperor.

While other kings spent all their time planning battles, I loved to fill my court with poets, scientists, and artists. I could speak six different languages, which helped me talk to people from many different lands. I was fascinated by animals, especially birds. Around the 1240s, I wrote a book called 'The Art of Hunting with Birds,' but it was really a science book! I studied how they fly, what they eat, and how they live. I wanted everyone to have a chance to learn, so in 1224, I started a special school, the University of Naples. It was one of the first universities in the world where the government, not the church, was in charge. Because I was so curious and loved learning so many things, people started calling me 'Stupor Mundi,' which is Latin for 'the Wonder of the World.'

At that time, Christian kings in Europe were fighting wars called the Crusades. I was asked to lead one, the Sixth Crusade, to the Holy Land. But I thought, 'What if we tried talking instead of fighting?' In 1229, I met with the Sultan of Egypt, a wise ruler named al-Kamil. We respected each other, and instead of a war, we made a peace treaty. He agreed to let Christians visit their holy city of Jerusalem peacefully. Some people were angry I didn't fight a big battle, but I believed that understanding each other was a much better way to solve problems.

I spent the rest of my life ruling my empire, always encouraging people to read, create art, and ask questions about the world. I lived to be 55 years old and passed away on December 13th, 1250. Today, people remember me as the 'Stupor Mundi,' the emperor who was also a scientist and a scholar. I am remembered for believing that knowledge is a great treasure and that talking and understanding can be more powerful than any army.
