Hello! My name is Gabriela Mistral. That’s the special name I used for my poems, but when I was born in the year 1889, my name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. I grew up in a beautiful, sunny valley in a country called Chile. I loved to play under the big sky and look at the tall mountains. My favorite thing was to listen to my grandmother tell wonderful stories.
When I grew up, I had two big loves. My first love was being a teacher. I loved helping children learn to read and write their very first words! It made my heart so happy to see their smiling faces when they learned something new. My second love was writing poems. I wrote about the things I saw every day—the bright sun, the twinkling stars, the fuzzy animals, and the flowers in the fields. I also wrote poems about how much I loved the people in my life.
People all around the world read my poems and loved them. One day in 1945, I was given a very special award called the Nobel Prize for my writing! It was like getting a giant, shiny gold star for all the poems I had shared. I lived to be 67 years old. I spent my life sharing my love for words and for children. Today, people still read my poems to remember the beauty in the world and the importance of being kind to one another.
