Georgia O'Keeffe: A Life in Color

Hello! My name is Georgia O'Keeffe, and I was a painter. I was born on a big dairy farm in Wisconsin on November 15th, 1887. Even as a little girl, I loved looking closely at the world around me—the shapes of leaves, the colors of flowers, and the big, wide sky. By the time I was ten years old, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up: an artist.

I went to art school in big cities like Chicago and New York to learn how to paint. My teachers wanted me to paint things exactly as they looked, but I wanted to paint how they made me feel. So, I started making my own kind of art. Around 1915, while I was working as a teacher in Texas, I created some simple, swooping charcoal drawings. I didn't show them to anyone, but a friend sent them to a gallery owner in New York named Alfred Stieglitz. He loved them and put them in his gallery for everyone to see in 1916!

Soon, I moved to New York City, and my life as an artist really began. Alfred and I got married in 1924. I started painting flowers, but I painted them in a new way. I painted them so big and close-up that you felt like you could fall right into them! It made people see flowers in a way they never had before. I also painted the tall, pointy skyscrapers of the city, showing how they reached for the sky.

In 1929, I took a trip that changed my life. I visited New Mexico for the first time and fell in love with the desert. The sky seemed bigger, the colors were brighter, and the land was full of amazing shapes, from red hills to sun-bleached animal bones. This place became my home and my greatest inspiration. I spent the rest of my life painting the beauty I found in the vast, quiet desert.

I painted for almost my entire life, creating thousands of artworks. I lived to be 98 years old. Today, people remember me as one of America's most important artists. My paintings hang in museums all over the world, reminding everyone to look closely, find the beauty in both big and small things, and see the world in their own special way.
