The story

Giorgio Vasari

Hello, my name is Giorgio Vasari. I was born in a beautiful town in Italy called Arezzo on July 30th, 1511. When I was a little boy, I loved art more than anything else in the world. I spent my days learning how to draw and paint. I was so inspired by all the amazing artists who lived around me in Italy. I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to create beautiful things just like them. My dream was to fill the world with art that everyone could enjoy and remember for a very long time. I couldn't wait to get started on my big adventure as an artist.

As I grew older, my dream came true, and I became an artist. I moved to a busy city called Florence, which was filled with art and creativity. I was asked to paint huge pictures right onto the walls and ceilings of grand buildings. These special paintings are called frescoes. One of the most important places I worked was a palace called the Palazzo Vecchio. But I wasn't only a painter; I was also an architect, which means I designed buildings. Around the year 1560, I was given a very important job. I designed a large building called the Uffizi. It was built for the city’s leaders to have their offices. Today, that same building is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the entire world.

One day, I had a very important idea. I realized that while there were many incredible artists, no one had ever written down their life stories. I worried that people might forget about them and all the wonderful art they had created. I wanted to make sure that their stories would be told forever! So, I decided to write a book. In the year 1550, I published my book, which I called 'The Lives of the Artists.' In it, I wrote about the lives of great artists, including my hero, Michelangelo. Because my book was the very first one to tell the history of art, people sometimes call me the very first art historian.

My life was filled with joy, creating my own art and writing about the art of others. I painted pictures, designed buildings, and wrote my book so that no one would ever forget the great artists of my time. I lived to be 62 years old. Today, hundreds of years later, people can still see my paintings in museums, walk through the beautiful Uffizi building I designed, and read my book to learn all about the wonderful artists of the Renaissance. My work helps keep their stories alive.
