The story

Henry David Thoreau

Hello. My name is Henry David Thoreau. I was born on July 12th, 1817, in a town called Concord, Massachusetts. Even when I was a little boy, my favorite place to be was outside. I loved exploring the woods and paddling a boat down the river, watching the fish swim and the birds fly high in the sky. My family had a business making pencils, and I learned how to make them, too. It was fun to work with my hands and create something useful.

When I grew up, I went to a big school called Harvard College. I loved to learn new things from books, but I also thought it was very important to think for myself. At school, all the students were supposed to wear black coats. But one day, I wore a green one instead. I chose green because it reminded me of the beautiful forest I loved so much. I had a very good friend named Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was also a writer. He and I would take long walks together and talk about big ideas, like how important it is to be true to yourself.

In the year 1845, I decided to try something new and exciting. I wanted to live a simple life and learn everything I could directly from nature. So, I went to the woods near a beautiful pond called Walden Pond. Using my own two hands, I built my very own small, cozy cabin. For two years, two months, and two days, that little cabin was my home. I spent my days watching the busy ants march in a line, and at night, I listened to the owls hoot in the darkness. I grew beans in my garden to have food to eat, and I wrote down everything I saw and thought about in my journal. Living there taught me a very important lesson: you don't need a lot of things to be happy.

After I left my little cabin in the woods, I wanted to share what I had learned. I wrote a book called 'Walden' to share all about my time living simply with nature. I also wrote about how important it is to stand up for what you believe is right. I thought everyone should do it peacefully, even if you have to do it all by yourself. I believed that every single person's thoughts were important and worth sharing.

I lived to be 44 years old. Today, people remember me for my great love of nature and for my ideas about living a simple and thoughtful life. My words have inspired people all over the world to help protect our planet and to listen to their own hearts. My little spot at Walden Pond is still a place people can visit to enjoy the quiet beauty of the woods, just like I did so long ago.
