Just want Hesiod?
Hello! My name is Hesiod. I lived a very long time ago, around the year 700 BCE, in a small Greek village called Ascra. My home was nestled at the bottom of a big, beautiful mountain called Mount Helicon. My job was to be a shepherd, which meant I spent my days watching over my family's sheep as they grazed on the green mountainside. It was usually a quiet life, filled with the sounds of bleating sheep and the whisper of the wind. But one day, something truly incredible happened. As I was tending my flock, I believe I was visited by the Muses, the nine goddesses of poetry, art, and science. They appeared right there on the mountain and gave me a special gift. It was the ability to tell the stories of the gods and the world in the form of beautiful, flowing poems.
My father had traveled a long way across the sea from a place called Cyme to settle in Ascra. Life in our village was hard, and farming the tough soil was not an easy job. I had a brother named Perses, and when our father’s land was divided between us, we had a serious disagreement. Perses took more than his fair share of our inheritance, and it made me think a lot about what is right and what is wrong. It also made me realize the great importance of hard work. I decided to write a long poem for him, and for everyone who might listen, called 'Works and Days.' In this poem, I gave all sorts of practical advice on how to be a good farmer, like when to plant your crops and how to build your tools for the best results. But more importantly, I wrote about my belief that it is much better to live an honest life filled with hard work than to be lazy or unfair to others.

Besides giving farming advice, I also loved telling the stories of the gods and goddesses who we believed watched over us. In my other famous poem, called the 'Theogony,' I told the epic story of how the whole universe began. I wanted to create a clear history for the gods. I wrote about the very first gods, like Gaia, who was the Earth itself, and Uranus, who was the Sky. I told the story of their children, the powerful Titans. Then, I explained how the famous Olympian gods, like the mighty Zeus with his thunderbolts, his wife Queen Hera, and his brother Poseidon, ruler of the seas, came to rule the world after a great struggle. My poem was like a giant family tree for all the gods and goddesses the Greek people believed in. It helped everyone understand who the gods were and where they came from, organizing all the different stories into one big, exciting tale.
I lived a full life in ancient Greece during the 8th century BCE. After I was gone, people kept telling and writing down my poems, passing them from one generation to the next. For thousands of years, my words have helped people learn about the ancient Greek world, its beliefs, and its way of life. People remember me today because my poems, 'Theogony' and 'Works and Days,' are some of the oldest and most complete stories we have from that time. They give us a special window, letting us look back and see how people lived, worked, and thought about their gods so very long ago.
