Jagadish Chandra Bose: The Plant Listener
Hello! My name is Jagadish Chandra Bose. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1858. When I was a little boy, I loved playing outside. I loved watching the busy ants and the fluttering butterflies. Most of all, I loved the quiet, wonderful plants. They were my green friends. I wondered about them all the time. Do they get hungry? Do they get sleepy when the sun goes down? I had so many questions about what they were feeling.
Everyone thought plants were just... plants! But I had a secret idea. I believed that plants could feel things, just like you and me. I thought they could feel happy in the warm sun and sad when their leaves were hurt. To prove my idea, around the year 1900, I built a super special machine. I called it a crescograph. It was like a pair of magic glasses that let me see how plants moved and grew in a super-fast way! It helped me listen to what the plants were trying to say.
My machine showed everyone that plants really do have feelings. They get excited for light and water, and they can feel tired, too. I lived to be 78 years old, always exploring the amazing world of nature. People remember me for showing the world how to listen to our plant friends. My work reminds everyone to be kind to every living thing, big or small, because we all share this wonderful world.
