Just want James Chadwick?
Hello! My name is James Chadwick. I was born on October 20th, 1891, in a town in England called Bollington. Even as a little boy, I loved to learn new things. School was my favorite place to be! I worked very hard and when I was 16 years old, in 1908, I won a special prize called a scholarship to go to a big university in the city of Manchester. I was so excited to keep learning!
When I got to the University of Manchester, I thought I was signing up to study mathematics. But I accidentally went into the wrong line and signed up for physics instead! It turned out to be the best mistake I ever made, because I loved it. My teacher was a very famous scientist named Ernest Rutherford. He had discovered that everything is made of tiny things called atoms, and that atoms have a small center called a nucleus. It was like we were detectives trying to solve the biggest puzzle in the universe!
Mr. Rutherford had found a tiny particle in the nucleus called a proton, which has a positive charge. But there was a problem. When scientists weighed the atoms, they were heavier than they should have been. It was a big mystery! It felt like a piece of the puzzle was missing. I spent years in my laboratory doing experiments, trying to find that missing piece. Then, one day in 1932, I found it! I discovered a new particle in the nucleus that had no charge at all. Because it was neutral, I decided to call it the 'neutron'.
Finding the neutron was a very big deal! It helped other scientists understand how atoms really work. A few years later, in 1935, I was given a very special award for my discovery, called the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was one of the proudest moments of my life. I lived a long and happy life full of scientific adventures and lived to be 82 years old. Today, my discovery of the neutron helps scientists in many ways, from creating clean energy to understanding the stars in the sky.
