The story

James Prescott Joule: The Boy Who Understood Energy

Hello! My name is James Prescott Joule. I will tell you the story of my life and my love for science. I was born on December 24th, 1818, in a town in England called Salford. My father owned a brewery, where they make a type of drink for grown-ups. When I was a boy, I was often sick, so I couldn't go to a regular school. Instead, I was taught right at home by a wonderful scientist named John Dalton. He showed me how exciting science could be and made me curious about the world.

I loved doing experiments! I was especially fascinated by electricity and wanted to see if I could use it to help with the work at our family's brewery. In 1840, I made an interesting discovery. I found that when electricity flows through a wire, it creates heat! This made me wonder, are movement and heat connected? To find the answer, I built a special machine around the year 1843. It had weights that would fall, and as they fell, they turned little paddles inside a tub of water. I watched carefully as the paddles spun, and I noticed the water got warmer! This proved that the energy of motion could be turned into heat energy.

At first, some other scientists weren't sure about my ideas. It was a new way of thinking! But I kept doing my experiments and sharing what I learned. I made a new friend, another scientist named William Thomson. Together, we discovered something that later helped people invent refrigerators to keep food cold! My work helped prove a very important rule of science called the law of conservation of energy. It's a big idea that means you can't create or destroy energy. You can only change it from one type to another, like how I changed the energy of motion into heat energy.

I lived to be 70 years old, and I never stopped being curious about the world. Because of my work, people learned so much about energy. Today, when scientists and engineers measure energy, they use a special unit named after me: the 'joule.' I am happy that my experiments helped everyone understand that all energy is connected, an idea that is still used to make amazing discoveries today.
