The story

Jean de La Fontaine

Hello! My name is Jean de La Fontaine, and I want to tell you the story of my life. I was born on July 8th, 1621, in a lovely town in France called Château-Thierry. My home was surrounded by forests and fields. As a boy, I didn't spend all my time with books. Instead, I loved to wander through the woods, watch the streams flow, and observe the animals. I would watch the clever fox, the busy ant, and the proud lion. I didn't know it then, but these animals I watched would one day become the stars of my most famous stories.

When I grew up, I moved to the big, bustling city of Paris. For a while, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. I even studied to become a lawyer, but my heart wasn't in it. My true passion was for writing and poetry. Around 1658, I was lucky to find friends who were also writers, painters, and thinkers. We would meet and share our ideas, which was incredibly inspiring. It was in Paris that I began to focus seriously on my writing and discovered that I could turn my love of nature and stories into something special.

In 1668, I published my first collection of stories, which I called 'Fables.' A fable is a short tale that teaches a lesson, or a 'moral,' and mine were special because they starred the animals I loved watching as a child. I was inspired by an ancient storyteller named Aesop, but I wrote my fables as poems, giving them my own rhythm and humor. You might have heard of some of them, like 'The Tortoise and the Hare,' which teaches that slow and steady wins the race, or 'The Crow and the Fox,' which warns us not to trust flatterers. I wanted to make learning important lessons fun.

Even though my characters were animals, my fables were really about people. The silly crow, the hardworking ant, and the boastful hare were all meant to show us a little bit about ourselves. The lessons in my stories were for everyone, from young children to the most powerful people in France, including the king! I continued writing and published more volumes of my fables over many years, with the final collection appearing in 1694. My goal was to entertain people, but also to make them think about how to be a good and wise person.

I wrote stories and poems for most of my life. I lived to be 73 years old, and my journey ended in Paris on April 13th, 1695. Though I am no longer there, my stories have traveled all over the world. My fables are still shared in classrooms and homes, translated into many languages. I am so happy that children like you still read about my animal friends and learn the same lessons about kindness, hard work, and wisdom that I hoped to share so long ago. A good story, after all, never truly ends.
