The story

Jean-Henri Fabre: The Poet of Insects

Hello! My name is Jean-Henri Fabre, and I want to tell you about my wonderful life spent with my favorite creatures: insects. I was born on December 21st, 1823, in a small village in France called Saint-Léons. My family was poor, but I felt very rich because I had the whole outdoors to explore. The fields and forests were my playground. I wasn't searching for shiny coins or jewels. I was looking for something much more interesting to me—bugs! I would spend my days quietly watching beetles crawl, grasshoppers hop, and butterflies flutter by. I was so curious and wanted to know everything about how they lived.

When I grew up, I became a teacher because I loved learning new things and wanted to share that joy with others. I started teaching when I was only 19 years old. In my classroom, I didn't want my students to just read about nature in books. I said, 'Let's go outside and see it for ourselves!' I would take them into the fields to look at plants and search for insects, just like I did when I was a boy. I had a very big dream. I wanted to have my own special place where I could study insects all day long. So, I worked very hard and saved all my money. In 1879, my dream came true! I bought a piece of land with a house on it. I called my new home the Harmas, and I turned the garden into my very own outdoor laboratory.

At the Harmas, I was the happiest I could be. I finally had a place where I could spend hours and hours watching my tiny friends. I learned to be very patient. I would sit perfectly still for a long time just to watch a wasp build its nest out of mud or to see how a scarab beetle rolled its little ball of dirt along the ground. I discovered so many amazing secrets about their lives. I knew I couldn't keep these secrets to myself! I wanted everyone to know how incredible insects are, so I began to write everything down. I wrote a very large set of books called 'Souvenirs Entomologiques,' and the first one was published in 1879. I didn't write them like other science books. I wrote them like exciting stories, full of adventure and wonder. Because of my beautiful writing, some people started calling me 'The Poet of Insects.'

I spent the rest of my days at my beloved Harmas, writing about my discoveries and exploring my garden full of buzzing and crawling creatures. I lived to be 91 years old. Today, my books are still read by children and grown-ups all over the world who want to learn about the secret lives of insects. My home, the Harmas, is now a museum where anyone can visit and see the garden where I made all my discoveries. I hope my stories inspire you to look closely at the world around you, to be curious, and to find wonder in all the small creatures we share our planet with.
