Hello! My name is Joaquín Sorolla, and I was a painter who dedicated my life to capturing light on canvas. I was born in the sunny city of Valencia, Spain, on February 27th, 1863. My life began with sadness, as my parents passed away when I was only two years old. My sister and I were then raised by our dear aunt and uncle. They hoped I would follow in my uncle's footsteps and become a locksmith, a practical trade. However, my heart belonged to art. I was constantly drawing, sketching everything I could see in the world around me. My family saw my deep passion for art, and they supported my dream. By the time I was fifteen, I was formally studying painting at the Academy of San Carlos. My favorite place to be was always the beach, where I would watch the brilliant sun dance across the water and illuminate the sand.
As a young artist eager to learn, I traveled to Madrid and Rome in the 1880s to study the works of the great master painters. While I learned a great deal, my heart and my inspiration always remained in my home country of Spain. In 1888, a wonderful thing happened: I married the love of my life, Clotilde García del Castillo. She became my greatest supporter, my muse, and my favorite person to paint. I soon realized that to truly capture the vibrant light I loved so much, I couldn't remain inside a dark studio. I began taking my easel and paints outdoors, setting up right on the beach to paint the real life and light as it happened before my eyes. This style, known as painting 'en plein air,' allowed me to use bright, quick brushstrokes to capture a moment in time. This became my signature, and in 1892, my painting 'Another Marguerite' won a gold medal, confirming that I was on the right path.

My paintings of Spanish life—children playing in the ocean waves, fishermen hauling their boats ashore, and families enjoying a sunny day at the beach—became very popular. I wanted the whole world to see the incredible beauty and joy of my homeland. My work began to gain international recognition, and in 1900, I was awarded the Grand Prix at the great Exposition Universelle in Paris, which was a tremendous honor for any artist. Following a hugely successful solo exhibition in Paris in 1906, my art traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to America. In 1909, I held a show in New York City, and thousands of people came to see my sun-filled paintings. It was an amazing feeling to know that my scenes of Spanish life could bring so much happiness to people so far away from my home.
My greatest and most demanding challenge arrived in 1911 when the Hispanic Society of America in New York commissioned me to create a masterpiece. They asked me to paint the very soul of Spain in a series of enormous murals that would show the people, festivals, and traditions from every unique region of the country. I named this monumental project 'Vision of Spain.' For years, from 1912 until I finally completed it in 1919, I traveled all over my beloved country. I went from the olive groves of Andalusia to the green hills of the Basque Country, sketching and painting. I created fourteen massive panels, each one bursting with life and color. It was the most difficult work I had ever undertaken, but it was truly my love letter to Spain.
All those years of intense focus and hard work on my 'Vision of Spain' murals took a great toll on my health. In 1920, while I was painting in my garden, I suffered a stroke that tragically left me unable to paint again. It was incredibly difficult to no longer be able to do the thing I loved most. I lived to be 60 years old, passing away on August 10th, 1923. Today, people remember me as the 'Master of Light.' My paintings hang in museums all over the world, and my home in Madrid has been turned into the Sorolla Museum, filled with my art for everyone to enjoy. I hope that when you see my work, you can feel the warmth of the Spanish sun and the immense joy I felt while capturing it on my canvas.
