The story

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Hello! My name is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but you can call me Goethe. I was born on a sunny day, August 28th, 1749, in a busy city called Frankfurt, in Germany. My house was big and full of books! My father wanted me to learn everything, from drawing to music to different languages. My favorite gift from my grandmother was a puppet theater. I would spend hours putting on shows and making up new stories for the little wooden characters. I knew right away that stories and imagination were my favorite things in the whole world. I just loved to create new worlds with my words.

When I grew up, my father sent me to a university in 1765 to study law, but my head was still full of poems and plays! I wrote all the time. One day, I wrote a book called 'The Sorrows of Young Werther'. It was published in 1774 and was about very strong feelings. To my surprise, people all over Europe loved it! Young men even started dressing like the main character. It was a funny sight to see! This book made me famous, and it showed me that writing about feelings could connect people everywhere. I learned that sharing your heart through stories is a powerful and wonderful thing to do.

A very kind and important man, Duke Karl August, read my book and invited me to come live and work with him in his city, Weimar, in 1775. I said yes! In Weimar, I did more than just write. I helped the Duke run the city, I managed a theater, and I became very interested in science. I would spend hours in the garden, studying how plants grow. I also studied clouds, rocks, and even how we see colors. I believed that art and science were connected. They are both ways of exploring the amazing world around us. My curiosity was like a little seed—it just kept growing and growing!

Of all the things I wrote, I am most remembered for a long, rhyming play called 'Faust'. I worked on this story for almost my entire life! It’s about a very smart doctor named Faust who wants to know everything in the universe. He makes a deal with a tricky character named Mephistopheles to get his wish. It is a big story about choices, learning, and what it means to be human. I finished the first part in 1808, and the second part right before the end of my life.

I lived a very long and busy life, full of books, friends, and discovery. I lived to be 82 years old and passed away in my home in Weimar in 1832. Even though I am no longer here, my stories and poems are still read by people all over the world. People remember me as someone who was always curious and never stopped learning. I hope my story reminds you to always ask questions, to look closely at the world, and to share your own wonderful ideas.
