Just want John Deere?
Hello! My name is John Deere. When I was a little boy, I loved to make things with my hands. I grew up and became a blacksmith. A blacksmith is someone who uses a big, hot fire and a hammer to make useful things out of metal, like tools for farmers.
My friends who were farmers had a big, sticky problem. The dirt in their fields was very, very sticky. When they used their plows, the thick, dark dirt would get stuck, like gooey mud! They had to stop working all the time to clean it off. This made their job very slow and very hard.
I wanted to help my friends. One day in the year 1837, I had a shiny idea! I found an old saw made of smooth, polished steel and shaped it into a brand new plow. Because my new plow was so smooth and slippery, the sticky dirt just slid right off! The farmers were so happy. Now they could plow their fields much faster and plant lots of food for everyone.
I was so glad I could help the farmers. I started a company to make my new plows for people all across the country. I lived to be 82 years old, and I was happy that my idea helped so many people. Today, my company makes the big green and yellow tractors you might see working in a field. It all started because I wanted to solve a sticky, muddy problem!
