Hello! My name is Juan Ponce de León. I was an explorer from a country called Spain, which is far across the ocean. Ever since I was a boy, I dreamed of adventure. I loved sailing on big wooden ships with huge white sails that puffed out in the wind, carrying me to new places.
On one of my big trips, I sailed across the giant blue sea and found a beautiful, sunny island. Today, this warm and wonderful place is called Puerto Rico. I explored its sandy beaches and green hills. A few years later, in 1513, I sailed again and found another new place. It was filled with so many colorful flowers. It was so pretty that I named it La Florida, which means 'flowery' in my language. You might know this sunny place as Florida.
I loved exploring and drawing maps of the new places I saw so that other people could learn about them. I lived to be about 47 years old. My adventures were a very long time ago, but today, when people visit the beautiful island of Puerto Rico or the sunny state of Florida, they are seeing the amazing lands I helped put on the world's maps.
