Just want Juan Ponce de León?
Hello. My name is Juan Ponce de León. I was born in a country called Spain a very long time ago, around the year 1474. When I was a boy, I dreamed of having big adventures and seeing new parts of the world. I loved to listen to stories about brave sailors crossing the huge blue ocean to find new lands. I hoped that one day, I would get to go on my own adventure.
When I was a young man, my dream came true. In 1493, I sailed with a famous explorer named Christopher Columbus on his second trip across the Atlantic Ocean. It was so exciting. We saw islands with tall green trees and colorful birds that I had never seen before in Spain. That amazing trip made me want to become a leader of my own expeditions and discover even more.
After exploring for some time, I decided to live on a beautiful, sunny island. In the year 1508, I became the very first governor of the island we named Puerto Rico. It was a wonderful place with warm weather and kind people. I helped build new towns and start farms there. But even with all that work, my heart still wanted the thrill of finding something new.
I heard interesting stories from the native people about a special land to the north. Some people even said it had a magical spring called the Fountain of Youth that could make people young forever. That sounded exciting, but my real job was to explore for the king of Spain. In 1513, I got on my ship and sailed north from Puerto Rico. On April 2nd, we finally saw land. It was covered in so many beautiful flowers. Because we arrived during the Easter season, which is called 'Pascua Florida' in Spanish, I decided to name the land 'La Florida'.

I was the first European to lead a journey to Florida. A few years later, in 1521, I went back to Florida to try and start a new town for people to live in. During my trip, I was badly hurt in a fight. My crew took me to an island called Cuba to get help, but my injury was very serious. I lived to be about 47 years old. Today, people remember me as a brave explorer who helped connect the old world of Europe with the new world of the Americas. And when you hear the name of the state of Florida, you can remember me and how I named it for all of its lovely flowers.
