Khafre

Hello, my name is Khafre. I was a king, or pharaoh, in ancient Egypt a very, very long time ago. My father was the great Pharaoh Khufu, who built the biggest pyramid of all. I lived in a warm land with the long Nile River and hot desert sands all around. It was a special place to grow up. I became the pharaoh and started my rule around the year 2558 BCE. It was a very important job, and I knew I had a lot of work to do for my people and my kingdom.

My job as a pharaoh was to take care of everyone in my kingdom. I had to make sure they were safe and had what they needed. It was also my duty to build amazing things that would honor our gods and show how strong Egypt was. These buildings were meant to last forever. My father had built his Great Pyramid, and I wanted to build something just as special. I wanted everyone who saw my buildings to remember me and the greatness of my time as pharaoh.

To create my legacy, I decided to build my own pyramid right next to my father’s at a place called Giza. It is not quite as big as his, but it is the second-largest pyramid there, and it stands very tall and proud against the sky. Near my pyramid, I also had a truly amazing statue built. It is called the Great Sphinx. It is a giant statue with the strong body of a lion and the head of a human. Many people who study history believe that the face of the Great Sphinx was made to look just like me. It stands guard over the pyramids, watching over the desert sands for all of time.

My time as pharaoh happened thousands of years ago. I lived a full life as a ruler in the beautiful land of Egypt. Even today, people from all over the world travel to see the special things I built. They come to look at my pyramid and the mysterious Great Sphinx. These amazing monuments help everyone remember the incredible story of ancient Egypt and the pharaohs who ruled there.
