The story

Khufu: Builder of the Great Pyramid

Hello, I am Khufu, and I was a pharaoh in ancient Egypt. A pharaoh is what my people called their king, and I lived a very long, long time ago. My reign began around 2589 BCE. My father was Pharaoh Sneferu, who was also known as a great builder, and my mother was Queen Hetepheres I. I learned a great deal from them about how to be a strong and wise ruler. From my father, I saw how great buildings could show the strength and spirit of our kingdom. When my time came, I became the ruler of the two lands of Egypt, a great responsibility that I took very seriously. It was my duty to continue the work of my family and lead my people to greatness.

Being a pharaoh was a very important job with many duties. I was the leader of my people, and it was my responsibility to make sure our kingdom was safe from any enemies. I also had to make sure that our harvests were good and that everyone had enough food to eat. Part of my work was to help our kingdom grow wealthy and strong. I sent brave explorers on expeditions to faraway lands. For example, I sent teams to a place called the Sinai Peninsula. From there, they brought back beautiful blue-green turquoise stones and valuable copper. Our talented craftspeople used these materials to create wonderful jewelry, tools, and art that made our kingdom famous.

My most famous project, and the one you probably know me for, is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is a building that has amazed people for thousands of years. But it was not just a building; it was a special tomb designed for a very important purpose. In ancient Egypt, we believed that a person's spirit lived on after death, and we called this the afterlife. The pyramid was built to protect my body and to help my spirit on its long journey. For a long time, people told stories that my pyramid was built by slaves, but this is not the true story. The Great Pyramid was built by thousands of skilled Egyptian workers. They were farmers, stone masons, and engineers who worked together for about 20 years to complete this wonder. We finished building it around 2560 BCE. We even built a special town for the workers and their families near the pyramid. This town had houses, streets, and even bakeries to make sure the hardworking builders had plenty of fresh bread to eat every day.

My time as pharaoh came to an end after I had ruled for about 23 years, around the year 2566 BCE. While my life on Earth was over, my story was now written in stone for all time. The Great Pyramid became my lasting legacy. It has stood strong through desert winds and the passing of countless seasons. I am proud that, thousands of years later, people from all over the world still travel to Egypt to marvel at what my people and I built together. It remains a true wonder of the world, a symbol of the skill and spirit of ancient Egypt that has stood the test of time.
