Just want King James I of England?
Hello! My name is James, and I had a very unusual start in life. I was born in a grand castle in Scotland on June 19th, 1566. My mother was the famous Mary, Queen of Scots. Before I could even walk or talk, something amazing happened. In 1567, when I was only one year old, I was made the King of Scotland! I was called King James VI. It was a very big job for a very little boy.
For many years, I ruled Scotland. Next door was the country of England, which was ruled by my cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. She was a very famous queen, but she did not have any children to take her place. When she passed away in 1603, I was asked to become the King of England, too! I traveled south to London and became King James I of England. For the first time, England and Scotland had the same king. It was a very important moment called the Union of the Crowns.
Being a king was full of adventures. In 1605, a group of men tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in what became known as the Gunpowder Plot. Luckily, they were stopped! I also loved books and wanted everyone to be able to read the Bible in English. So, I gathered a team of scholars, and in 1611 they finished a new version, which people still call the King James Bible. Around that time, I also encouraged brave explorers to sail across the ocean. In 1607, they started a new settlement in America and named it Jamestown, after me.
I was a king for almost my entire life, first in Scotland and then in England, too. I lived to be 58 years old and passed away in 1625. Today, people remember me for bringing two great kingdoms together under one crown. They also remember the beautiful King James Bible, which is still read all over the world, and the brave settlers who started a new life in a new land. My story shows that you can do big things, no matter how small you start.
