The story

John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh

Hello! My name is John William Strutt, but most people knew me as Lord Rayleigh. I was born in England on November 12th, 1842. Even when I was a little boy, I was full of questions! I always wanted to know how things worked, from the smallest bug to the biggest sky. My curiosity was like a superpower that helped me look at the world and ask, 'Why?'.

When I grew up, I went to a famous university called Cambridge and decided to become a physicist, which is a scientist who studies energy and how things move. I loved doing experiments so much that I built my very own laboratory at my country home in 1879. It was my special place to explore big ideas. There, I studied the science of sound, which is how we hear things, and the science of light, which is how we see things.

One of my biggest questions was about the air we breathe. I was doing experiments and noticed something funny: nitrogen gas taken from the air was just a little bit heavier than nitrogen gas made in my lab. It was a tiny difference, but I knew it must mean something! I asked my friend, another scientist named William Ramsay, to help me solve the puzzle. Together, we worked hard and in 1894, we found the reason: there was a new, secret gas hiding in the air!

We named the new gas Argon, which means 'the lazy one,' because it didn't like to mix with other elements. For this discovery, I was given a very special award in 1904 called the Nobel Prize in Physics! I also figured out the answer to another big question: 'Why is the sky blue?'. I discovered that sunlight scatters in the air, and the blue light scatters the most, making the whole sky look like a beautiful blue blanket.

I lived a wonderful, curious life and was 76 years old when I passed away. People remember me for discovering Argon and for explaining our blue sky. So, the next time you look up on a sunny day, you can think of my work and remember to always stay curious.
