The story

Lord Rayleigh

Hello. My name is John, but many people called me Lord Rayleigh. When I was a little boy, I loved to ask questions. I would look at the big world and wonder why things happened. Science was my favorite game. I had a special room called a laboratory, and it was my playground. It was a place where I could try to find the answers to all my big questions.

Have you ever looked up at the big sky and wondered why it is blue? I did. I studied the sunshine to find the answer. I discovered that sunshine holds all the colors of a rainbow. When sunlight shines through the air, the tiny bits in the air scatter the blue color everywhere. That is what paints the sky blue for us to see. I also found something new hiding in the air we breathe. It was a secret, invisible gas. I called my discovery Argon. It was so exciting to find something that was there all along.

I loved being a scientist and sharing what I learned. For my discoveries, I was given a very special award called the Nobel Prize in the year 1904. I lived to be 76 years old, and I never stopped being curious. Today, whenever you look up at the big, beautiful blue sky, you can think of me. Remember that asking questions is the best adventure of all.
