The story

Lorenzo de' Medici: The Magnificent Leader

Hello! My name is Lorenzo de' Medici, but many people called me 'Lorenzo the Magnificent.' I was born a very long time ago in a beautiful city called Florence, in Italy. My birthday was on January 1st, 1449. My family, the Medici, was very well-known and important in our city. We loved Florence and worked hard to help it grow into a famous place full of new ideas and wonderful art. It was a very exciting place to live, and I was proud to be part of a family that cared so much about making our home a special place for everyone.

When I was a young man, my father passed away, and in the year 1469, I became the leader of Florence. I had a great passion for art, and I loved finding talented people and helping them. It was my favorite thing to do. I wanted our city to be the most beautiful city in the world. I supported amazing artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. I gave them what they needed to create wonderful paintings and sculptures. Because of this, our city became a busy, buzzing place filled with creativity. You could walk down the street and see a new statue being carved or a beautiful painting being finished. It felt like our city was alive with color and new ideas, and I was so happy to help make it happen.

Being a leader wasn't always easy, and sometimes it was very hard. I remember a very sad day in 1478 when my brother, Giuliano, was killed during an attack. It was a terrible time for my family and for Florence. I knew I had to be very brave to protect my city and keep everyone safe. Besides supporting art, I also worked hard to be a peacemaker. In Italy, there were many different cities, and sometimes they did not get along. I spent a lot of my time talking to other leaders, helping the cities become friends so they would not fight with each other. Keeping the peace was one of my most important jobs.

My life was full of art, leadership, and a deep love for my city. I lived to be 43 years old and passed away in the year 1492. People remember me for helping to start a very special time of art and new ideas called the Renaissance. The beautiful things that artists created in Florence so long ago are still enjoyed by people from all over the world today, and I am proud that I could help bring so much beauty into the world.
