The story

Louis Armstrong

Hello there! My name is Louis Armstrong, but my friends called me Satchmo. I was a musician, which means I spent my life making music for people. I grew up in a special city called New Orleans, where music was everywhere! You could hear happy tunes on every corner, and it made me want to make my own music to make people smile.

My favorite instrument was my shiny, brass trumpet. I loved to blow into it and make big, happy sounds! Toot-toot! I also loved to sing. My voice wasn't smooth and quiet; it was deep and gravelly, kind of like a friendly bear's growl. Sometimes, I sang with silly sounds instead of words, which is called scat singing. It sounds like this: 'Skeebop-doo-wop!' It was my own special way to have fun with a song. People said my smile was as big as my music!

One of my most famous songs is called 'What a Wonderful World.' It’s all about seeing the pretty things around us, like green trees and blue skies. I lived a long and happy life for 69 years, sharing my songs all over the world. Even today, people listen to my music when they want to feel joyful and remember to look for the wonderful things all around them.
