The story

Luis Federico Leloir: The Curious Scientist

Hello! My name is Luis Federico Leloir. I was born in a city called Paris, France, on September 6th, 1906. Even though I was born there, my family's home was in Argentina, and we moved back when I was just two years old. I grew up on a big ranch where I loved to watch insects and always wondered how things worked. This curiosity about the world around me made me want to learn all about the human body. So, I decided to go to the University of Buenos Aires to study and become a doctor.

After I became a doctor in 1932, I realized that my biggest questions were not about things like fixing broken bones. Instead, I wanted to understand the tiny, invisible things that happen inside our bodies every second. I knew then that I wanted to be a scientist! To learn as much as I could, I traveled all the way to England in 1936 to work with some of the smartest scientists in the world. When I returned home to Argentina, I had a big dream. In 1947, I started my very own research lab with some of my friends. Our lab was small at first, but we were excited and ready to make big discoveries.

In our new lab, we studied something that you probably eat every day: sugar! We wanted to find out how our bodies take the sugar from our food and turn it into energy for running, jumping, and playing. It was a very tricky puzzle, and it took a lot of work. After many experiments, my team and I discovered special little helpers inside our bodies called 'sugar nucleotides.' You can think of them like tiny delivery trucks that carry sugar to exactly where your body needs it to make energy. This was a huge discovery that helped other scientists all over the world understand how our amazing bodies work.

Our discovery was so important that in 1970, I was given a very famous award called the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It was a very proud day for me, my team, and my home country of Argentina. I lived to be 81 years old, and I spent my whole life being curious and looking for answers to fascinating questions. Today, the laboratory I started is named the Leloir Institute, and scientists there are still making important discoveries to help people. I hope my story reminds you to always stay curious and ask big questions!
