The story

Manuel I of Portugal

Hello! My name is Manuel, and I was a king of Portugal a very long time ago. I was born on May 31st, 1469, in a town called Alcochete. When I was a boy, I never imagined I would one day wear the crown. My cousin, John II, was the king, and he already had a son to take his place. But a very sad thing happened—the prince died in an accident. King John didn't have any other children, and as time went on, he chose me to be the next king. When he passed away in 1495, I became King Manuel I of Portugal. It was a huge responsibility that I did not expect to have, but I was ready. I had big dreams for my country, and I wanted to see Portugal become one of the most important kingdoms in the world.

My biggest dream was for Portugal to explore the world. At the time, valuable spices like cinnamon and pepper came from a faraway land called India, and the journey to get them over land was very long and dangerous. I wanted to find a way to get there by sea! I chose a brave captain named Vasco da Gama to lead this important mission. In 1497, he set sail with his fleet, and everyone in Portugal waited anxiously, hoping for his success. Two years later, in 1499, he returned with amazing news: he had reached India! This was a massive success for our kingdom. The sea route was open! A year later, in 1500, I sent another explorer, Pedro Álvares Cabral, on a voyage. He sailed so far west to catch good winds that he discovered a huge new land, which we now call Brazil. These incredible discoveries made Portugal one of the richest and most powerful kingdoms in the world. Our small country was finally making a big name for itself on the world stage.

With the great wealth coming from our trade with India and other new lands, we could make Portugal even more beautiful. I wanted our buildings to celebrate our amazing sailors and their journeys across the ocean. We created a special style of architecture that was named after me—the Manueline style. If you look closely at these buildings, you can see stone carvings of twisted ropes, seashells, anchors, and other things from the sea. Two of the most famous buildings I ordered to be built were the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower in our capital city, Lisbon. Construction on them began in the early 1500s. They were my way of thanking our brave explorers and showing the world the glory and power of Portugal. These buildings became symbols of our country's great achievements.

My time as king was an exciting one, full of adventure and discovery. After a long reign, my life came to an end on December 13th, 1521. I lived to be 52 years old. Because so many wonderful things happened while I was king, people gave me the nickname 'Manuel the Fortunate.' My reign is remembered as Portugal's Golden Age, a time when our small country made a big mark on the world map. The beautiful Manueline buildings still stand today, reminding everyone of the time when our brave sailors charted unknown seas and changed the world forever.
