The story

Marie Tharp: Mapper of the Ocean Floor

Hello! My name is Marie Tharp. I want to tell you the story of how I drew a map of the biggest, deepest secret on Earth—the bottom of the ocean! I was born on July 30th, 1920, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. My dad, William, made maps for a living. He would travel all over the country for his job, and sometimes I got to go with him! I loved watching him work. I would see him collect dirt samples and draw detailed maps of the land. It was like a treasure hunt, and it made me dream of making my own amazing maps one day.

When I grew up, I went to college and studied geology, which is the science of the Earth. In 1948, I got a job at a big science laboratory in New York. It was my job to be a mapmaker! My partner, a scientist named Bruce Heezen, would go out on big ships and use a special tool called sonar to collect information about how deep the ocean was. Back then, women weren't allowed to go on the research ships, so I stayed in the office. Bruce would send me pages and pages of numbers, and my job was to turn that data into drawings of what the ocean floor looked like.

As I carefully drew my maps, I started to notice something amazing. Hidden deep under the Atlantic Ocean, there was a huge mountain range! And running right down the middle of it was a deep valley, which I called a rift valley. No one had ever seen this before! I realized this valley was where the Earth’s surface was splitting apart and creating new ocean floor. At first, some people didn't believe me, but my maps showed the truth. I had found one of the most important features on our planet!

Bruce and I worked together for many years, piecing together the puzzle of the ocean floor. We took all of our drawings and created one giant, colorful map. In 1977, we published the first complete map of the world’s ocean floor. For the first time, everyone could see the giant mountains, deep trenches, and amazing landscape hidden beneath the waves. It was like we had discovered a whole new world.

I lived to be 86 years old, and I never stopped being curious about our planet. Today, people remember me as the woman who mapped the ocean floor. My maps helped prove that the continents move, and they changed the way we see our world. I hope my story shows you that if you look closely, you can discover incredible things that no one has ever seen before.
