The story

The Story of Matthew Boulton

Hello! My name is Matthew Boulton. I was born in a busy town called Birmingham, in England, way back on September 3rd, 1728. My father had a wonderful workshop where he made shiny metal things like buckles for shoes and buttons for coats. I loved watching him work, and when I was old enough, I joined him in the family business. It was fun to learn how to make useful and beautiful things from metal.

I had big dreams! I wanted to create things in a new and better way, not just in a small shop. So, in 1761, I started building a giant new workshop called the Soho Manufactory. It was one of the very first factories of its kind in the entire world! Instead of people making things in lots of different little shops, we did everything together under one huge roof. It was a very busy and exciting place to be, full of new ideas.

One day, I met a brilliant man named James Watt. He had invented an amazing new steam engine that was much more powerful than any other. But he needed help to build it and show it to the world. We decided to become great partners in 1775! Inside my big factory, we worked together to build his incredible engines. Our steam engines were so strong they could pump water out of deep mines and power machines to make cloth. We were a great team, and our work helped many people.

Our steam engines were so powerful, I even used them to make money—literally! I built special machines that were powered by steam and could press metal into perfect, round coins. Starting in 1797, my factory made shiny new pennies for the whole country of England. It was amazing to see our engines create something that everyone could hold in their hands and use every day.

I lived a very busy and exciting life for 80 years. Today, people remember me as a leader during a time of great change called the Industrial Revolution. My friend James and I helped change the world with our steam engines, making it possible to create things in new and faster ways. The work we did so long ago helped build the modern world we live in today.
