The story

Maximilian I: The Last Knight

Hello! My name is Maximilian of the House of Habsburg, and I was a Holy Roman Emperor. I was born on March 22nd, 1459, in a castle in Austria. My father was Emperor Frederick III, so I grew up knowing I would one day be a ruler. But what I really loved were stories about brave knights in shining armor. My childhood was filled with excitement and training for the life I dreamed of. I spent my days learning to ride horses, hunt in the great forests, and practice for tournaments, always imagining my own great adventures.

When I was 18 years old, a very important event changed my life. On August 19th, 1477, I married a wonderful and powerful duchess named Mary of Burgundy. Our marriage wasn't just about love; it was a powerful alliance that joined her wealthy lands with my family's lands. Her lands included parts of modern-day France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This single event made our family, the Habsburgs, one of the most powerful in all of Europe. Mary and I had two children, a son named Philip and a daughter named Margaret, and our marriage was a very happy one.

After my father passed away in 1493, I became the ruler of our Austrian lands, which was a huge responsibility. A few years later, in 1508, I was elected Holy Roman Emperor. This was the highest title I could achieve. As emperor, I worked hard to make the government of the empire run more smoothly for everyone. I also had to be a strong military leader, and I led armies to protect our lands from enemies. I always hoped to be remembered as a strong and just ruler who truly cared for his people.

Even with all my duties as an emperor, I never lost my love for knighthood. In fact, people often called me 'the last knight' because I lived by the code of chivalry from the old stories. I hosted magnificent jousting tournaments where knights could prove their skills, and I loved to participate and show off my own abilities. I also wanted everyone to know my story, so I hired the best artists of the time, like the famous Albrecht Dürer. They created amazing paintings, prints, and even suits of armor that told tales of my bravery. I wanted to be a hero, just like in the books I read as a boy.

Over the years, I learned that sometimes, making friends and building families is more powerful than fighting wars. We had a famous family saying that I followed: 'Let others wage war; you, happy Austria, marry!' Instead of always fighting, I arranged for my son, Philip, to marry Joanna, a princess from Spain. This was a brilliant plan! It meant that my grandson, Charles, would one day rule over a massive territory including Austria, Burgundy, the Netherlands, and all of Spain with its lands across the ocean. Through these clever marriages, I built a peaceful and enormous empire for my family.

I lived a very full and adventurous life, passing away in 1519. I lived to be 59 years old. Today, people remember me not just as an emperor, but as a great knight who was a patron of the arts, supporting artists and their work. My greatest legacy was building the power of the Habsburg family through clever and peaceful marriages, a strategy which shaped the map of Europe for hundreds of years. My story shows that there are many ways to be strong.
