Mencius: Finding the Good in Everyone

Hello, my name is Meng Ke, but people today know me as Mencius. My story begins a very long time ago, around the year 372 BCE, in a place called the State of Zou in China. My mother believed that where you live shapes who you become, and she was determined to give me the best start in life. When I was a boy, we first lived near a cemetery. My mother noticed I began to act out the sad ceremonies I saw there. She quickly moved us. Our next home was near a busy market, and soon I was pretending to be a loud merchant, shouting about prices. My mother knew this was not the right place either. Finally, she moved us next to a school. There, I watched the students and scholars, and I began to copy their love for learning and reading. My mother was happy, knowing we had found the perfect place for me to grow.

I grew up during a very difficult time in China’s history called the Warring States period. For many years, the different states were constantly at war with one another. Seeing so much fighting and suffering made me think deeply about how we could live together in peace. I wanted to find a way to build a better, kinder world. About a century before I was born, there was a great teacher named Confucius. His ideas about how people should treat each other with respect and fairness were very powerful. I decided to study his teachings, believing they held the key to ending the conflicts. I spent my life exploring and expanding on his ideas, hoping to convince the rulers of my time to lead with goodness instead of with armies.

My most important teaching is a simple one: I believe that all human beings are born with goodness inside them. It is a natural part of who we are. To explain this, I often told a story. Imagine you are walking and you see a small child about to fall into a deep well. What would you do? I believe that any person, without even thinking, would feel a jolt of alarm and want to rush to help. You wouldn't do it to get a reward or to be praised by the child's parents. You would do it because a feeling of compassion is built into you. I called these built-in feelings the “four sprouts.” They are like tiny seeds inside every person: the sprout of compassion, the sprout of shame when you do something wrong, the sprout of courtesy and respect, and the sprout of wisdom. Like any seeds, they need to be nurtured with education and good examples so they can grow into strong virtues.

During the 320s BCE, I decided to take my ideas on the road. I traveled to the courts of many different kings and rulers, hoping to share my philosophy with them. My message was always the same. I told them that a true leader should rule with fairness and care for the well-being of their people. I explained that if they lowered taxes, made sure everyone had enough food, and protected the land, their kingdom would be strong and their people would be loyal. I urged them to focus on kindness rather than just on power and war. Unfortunately, many of the rulers I spoke with were not interested in my advice. They were too focused on conquering their neighbors. Even though many didn't listen, I felt it was my duty to keep sharing these ideas for a more peaceful world.

Eventually, I returned to my home state of Zou. I stopped traveling to royal courts and instead spent the rest of my days as a teacher, sharing my ideas with students who were eager to learn. After I was gone, my students carefully collected my teachings and conversations into a book that is now called the 'Mencius.' I lived to be about 83 years old. Today, I am remembered as the 'Second Sage' of Confucianism, second only to Confucius himself. My belief that everyone has goodness inside them has inspired people for thousands of years, reminding us all that we have the power to be kind, fair, and just.
