The story

The Story of Mencius

Hello! My name is Mencius. I lived a very, very long time ago in a place called China. I was not a king or a soldier. I was a thinker! I loved to watch people and think about big questions. I would ask, "What makes people happy?" and "How can we all be good friends with each other?".

I had a very special idea that I wanted to share. I believed that every single person in the world is born with a little seed of goodness inside their heart. That little seed is like a tiny plant seed. It needs sunshine and water to grow into a big, strong tree. Our seed of goodness needs love and kindness to grow big and strong, too. If we help each other and share our toys and our smiles, our goodness will grow and grow until it fills us all up with happiness.

I traveled to many different places to share my idea about the seed of goodness. I even told kings and queens about it. I said that the most important job for a leader is to be kind. A good leader helps everyone's seed of goodness grow. I lived to be about 83 years old. Today, people still read my stories and remember my simple idea: be kind, help others, and let the goodness inside you shine bright for everyone to see.
