Just want Mencius?
Hello! My name is Meng Ke, but you might know me as Mencius. I was born a very long time ago, around the year 372 BCE, in a place called the State of Zou in China. When I was a boy, China was not one single country like it is today. It was made up of many smaller states that were often at war with each other. This was called the Warring States period. It was a difficult time, but my mother always made sure I had a safe home where I could learn and grow. She taught me that being a good student was one of the most important things I could do.
As I grew older, I studied the ideas of a great teacher who lived long before me named Confucius. He taught that people should always be respectful, honest, and kind to one another. I thought about his ideas all the time, and they helped me come up with my own special idea! I believed that all people are born good. I liked to explain it this way: imagine every person has a tiny seed of goodness inside their heart. If you take care of that seed by making good choices and learning new things, it will grow into a strong and kind heart, just like a little acorn can grow into a giant oak tree. I couldn't wait to share this thought with everyone.
Once I became a teacher, I didn't stay in just one place. For about forty years, I traveled all around China, visiting the courts of different kings and rulers. I wanted to help them stop all the fighting. I would tell them, 'A good ruler is kind to his people. If you make sure everyone has enough food to eat and feels safe, your kingdom will be peaceful and strong.' Some of the rulers listened to my advice, but many were too busy with their wars to change. It was sometimes disappointing, but I never gave up hope that people could learn to be kinder to each other.

After many years of traveling, I returned to my home state to teach my students. Together, we wrote down all of my ideas and my conversations with the kings. I lived to be about 83 years old. After my time, my students collected all of my teachings into a book called the Mencius. For thousands of years, people have read this book to learn about my belief in the goodness of people. I am remembered as the 'Second Sage,' which means I am thought of as the second most important wise person after Confucius. I am happy my story still reminds people that kindness can grow in the world.
