Just want Montgolfier Brothers?
Hello! We are the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne. We grew up in France a long time ago, in the 1700s. Our family made paper, which was interesting, but we were always dreaming of something more. We loved watching things float and fly, like clouds in the sky and smoke from a fire. Watching the world around us gave us a wonderful, grand idea!
One day in 1782, I, Joseph, was watching the smoke from our fireplace. I saw how it went up, up, up! I thought, 'What if we could trap that smoky, hot air inside a big paper bag? Could it lift the bag into the sky?'. I was so excited. I shared the idea with my brother, Étienne, and he thought it was a brilliant idea, too. We got to work right away, experimenting with paper and fabric to build our first balloon.
After many tries, we built a huge balloon. On June 4th, 1783, we showed it to everyone in our town of Annonay. It flew high into the sky all by itself! Everyone was amazed. Later that year, on September 19th, we had a very special flight for the king of France. We wanted to make sure it was safe for people, so we sent up the first-ever passengers in a hot air balloon. It was not people, though! Our first passengers were a sheep, a duck, and a rooster! They landed safely after their trip, and everyone cheered for our success.
Finally, the big day came. On November 21st, 1783, two brave men, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes, climbed into the basket of our newest balloon. They lit the fire that warmed the air, and the balloon filled up like a giant bubble. Then, they lifted off the ground! They became the first people to fly, floating high over the city of Paris. We had shown the world that humans could soar like birds.

Our invention made people believe that anything was possible. I, Jacques-Étienne, lived to be 54 years old, and I, Joseph-Michel, lived to be 69 years old. We were so proud to have worked together as brothers to make our dream come true. Today, people all over the world still fly in colorful hot air balloons for fun and adventure, and it all started with our simple dream of touching the clouds.
