The story

Nebuchadnezzar II

Hello, my name is Nebuchadnezzar II, and I was once the king of the great city of Babylon. My story begins long ago, around the year 634 BCE, when I was born into a world of great empires. My father was Nabopolassar, a strong leader who had a bold vision for our people. He fought to free us from the powerful Assyrian Empire, and in 626 BCE, he succeeded in creating a new kingdom for us—the Neo-Babylonian Empire. I grew up in this new era of freedom and power, watching my father build our nation from the ground up. I learned from him what it meant to be a leader and a commander. As a young man, I proved my skills on the battlefield and became his top general, leading his armies to protect and expand the empire he had founded.

My defining moment as a military commander came in the year 605 BCE. I led our army against a combined force of Egyptians and the remaining Assyrians at a place called Carchemish. The battle was fierce and critical for the future of our empire. When the dust settled, we were victorious. This single victory established Babylon as the most powerful force in the entire region, shifting the balance of power for generations. However, my triumph was soon followed by sorrow. Shortly after the battle, I received the news that my father, the king, had passed away. I had to rush back to our capital city, Babylon, to take my place on the throne. I was ready to lead, to protect my people, and to build an empire even greater than my father had imagined.

While I was known as a skilled warrior, my true passion was not conquest but construction. I dreamed of making my capital, Babylon, the most magnificent city the world had ever seen. My vision was one of grandeur and security. I ordered the construction of enormous double walls around the city, so thick and strong that chariots could race along the top of them. The main entrance to my city was a masterpiece known as the Ishtar Gate. I had it covered in brilliant blue-glazed bricks that shimmered in the sun. To honor our gods, the gate was decorated with golden images of lions, bulls, and dragons. I also dedicated resources to rebuilding the great ziggurat, a towering temple called Etemenanki, which seemed to stretch from the earth to the heavens.

Of all my building projects, the one that has captured imaginations for centuries is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This incredible wonder was not built for power or for the gods, but out of love for my wife, Queen Amytis. She came from a green, mountainous land called Media, and in the flat plains of Babylon, she greatly missed the hills and flowers of her home. To ease her sadness, I decided to build a mountain for her within our city. I constructed a series of rising, terraced platforms, like a giant staircase to the sky. These terraces were filled with deep soil and planted with a breathtaking variety of trees, vines, and flowers. To keep this paradise alive, we engineered amazing machines to lift water from the nearby river all the way to the top, ensuring the gardens were always lush and green.

Building a great city was only one part of my duty. To keep my empire safe and prosperous, I had to be a firm and decisive ruler. In those ancient times, rebellion was a constant threat. The Kingdom of Judah, with its capital city of Jerusalem, challenged my authority on two separate occasions. The first time they rebelled, in 597 BCE, I led my army to capture the city and took their king back to Babylon as a prisoner. When they rebelled a second time, my response was more severe. In 587 BCE, I returned and ordered the destruction of Jerusalem and its great temple. Actions like these were a difficult but necessary part of being a king; protecting the stability of the entire empire was always my most important duty. My long and prosperous reign saw Babylon control vast lands and immense wealth.

I ruled as king for 43 years, one of the longest and most successful reigns in the history of my people. I lived a full life, and my time on earth came to an end in the year 562 BCE. While the Neo-Babylonian Empire I led did not last forever, the stories of my city have been told for thousands of years. I am remembered not just as a conqueror who expanded an empire, but as one of the greatest builders of the ancient world. The glorious Ishtar Gate was carefully excavated and reassembled, and it still stands in a museum today for all to see. It serves as a small reminder of the golden age I brought to my people and the breathtaking beauty of my beloved Babylon.
