The story

Nicolaus Copernicus: The Star Gazer

Hello! My name is Nicolaus Copernicus. I was born a long, long time ago, on February 19th, 1473, in a town called Toruń. When I was a little boy, my favorite thing to do was look up at the night sky. The stars twinkled like tiny diamonds, and the moon glowed so bright. I always wondered about them. What were they? How did they move? I wanted to solve the sky's biggest puzzles!

Back then, most people believed that our Earth was the center of everything. They thought the big Sun, the glowing Moon, and all the sparkly stars danced around us. I watched the sky night after night from my special tower. I used my tools to watch the planets travel on their paths. And the more I watched, the more I thought… what if that wasn't right? I had a new idea! It was a big, bright idea, just like the Sun. I thought, 'Maybe we are the ones who are dancing around the Sun!'.

My idea that the Earth and other planets travel around the Sun was very different. I wrote all my thoughts and drawings in a big book to share with the world. I worked on it for many, many years. I lived to be 70 years old, and my book was published in 1543, the same year my long life came to an end. Even today, when you look up at the stars, you can remember my big idea. It helped us understand our wonderful place in the giant, beautiful universe.
