Just want Ögedei Khan?
Hello! My name is Ögedei Khan. You might have heard of my famous father, Genghis Khan. He created the Mongol Empire, which was one of the biggest the world had ever seen! I was his third son, and I was born around the year 1186. Growing up, I spent a lot of time watching my father. From him, I learned all about how to be a strong and fair leader for all of our people.
Before my father left this world, he made a very important choice. He chose me to be the next leader after him. It was a huge honor, and I wanted to make him proud. In the year 1229, all the important Mongol leaders gathered for a big meeting called a kurultai. At this meeting, they officially made me the second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. My new job was to look after the giant empire my father had built. I also wanted to help it grow even more so that all our people would be safe and have everything they needed.
An empire as big as ours needed a capital city, which is a special place for the government to work. So, around the year 1235, I gave the order to build a city called Karakorum. It became a busy, exciting place with strong walls all around it. I also created something very special called the Yam. You can think of it like a super-fast mail service! We set up stations with fresh horses all across the empire. This way, our messengers could ride quickly from one station to the next to deliver important news.
I lived to be about 55 years old, and my journey ended on December 11th, 1241. I am remembered for helping the Mongol Empire become strong and organized. The capital city I built, Karakorum, and the speedy Yam mail system I created helped connect our people across huge distances. My work helped the empire stay strong for many years to come.
