Just want Ötzi?
Hello! My name is Ötzi, but many people today call me the Iceman. I lived a very, very long time ago, more than 5,000 years! My home was high in the snowy mountains we now call the Alps. I spent my days walking through forests and climbing rocky paths. One day, I fell asleep in the snow and was covered by ice, which kept me perfectly preserved like I was in a time capsule.
Life in the Copper Age was an adventure. To stay warm, I wore a coat made of goatskin, leggings, and a cozy bearskin hat. My favorite shoes were stuffed with soft grass to keep my feet toasty. I was very clever and made my own tools. My most special tool was my axe, which had a blade made of shiny copper—it was brand new technology back then! I also carried a bow and arrows for hunting and a small flint knife for cutting.
For thousands of years, I rested in my icy bed. Then, on a sunny day, September 19th, 1991, two hikers named Helmut and Erika Simon were walking in the mountains. The ice had melted just enough, and they saw me! At first, they didn't know who I was. But soon, scientists realized I was an amazing discovery from the distant past. I was a secret from long ago, finally revealed!
My journey in the mountains ended when I was about 45 years old. But my story was just beginning. Because I was frozen in time, I can teach you so much about what life was like in the Copper Age. Today, you can visit a special museum in Italy to see me and all my amazing tools. I am a messenger from the past, and I love sharing my story with you.
