The story

Ptolemy I: The King Who Built a Great Library

Hello, my name is Ptolemy. I was born a very long time ago, around the year 367 BCE, in a place called Macedonia. When I was a boy, I had a very special friend. His name was Alexander, and you might know him as Alexander the Great. We were the best of friends. We spent our days learning and playing, but our favorite thing to do was dream. We would talk for hours about all the big adventures we wanted to have together. We imagined traveling all over the world, seeing new places, and meeting new people. We promised each other that one day, our dreams would come true, and we would explore everything the world had to offer, side by side.

When Alexander and I grew up, our dreams of adventure really did come true. He became a great king, and I became one of his most trusted generals in his army. It was my job to help him lead our soldiers. Together, we traveled to so many amazing and faraway lands. I saw incredible things I had only dreamed of as a boy. We marched through vast deserts and saw the giant, pointy pyramids in a wonderful land called Egypt. It was a place full of history and magic. But one day, something very sad happened. My dear friend Alexander died in the year 323 BCE. His huge kingdom was now without a leader, and all of his generals had to decide what to do next. I thought about all the places I had seen, and I knew exactly where I wanted to go.

I decided to return to beautiful Egypt. With my friend gone, the people there needed a new leader, and I stepped up to help them. I worked hard, and in the year 305 BCE, I officially became the new king of Egypt, which they called a Pharaoh. I wanted to build a magnificent new capital city for everyone, so I helped create Alexandria, right beside the sparkling sea. But I had another, even bigger idea. I wanted to create a special place that could hold all the books and scrolls from all over the world. So, I built the famous Library of Alexandria. It wasn't just for me; it was a wonderful place where scholars, students, and anyone who was curious could come and learn about everything imaginable.

I lived to be about 84 years old. The family I started, who were called the Ptolemies, continued to rule Egypt for almost 300 years after me. Today, people remember me for starting one of the most famous libraries in all of history. I am also remembered for being a king who believed that learning was one of the most important and exciting adventures anyone could ever have.
