The story

Ramesses II: The Great Pharaoh

Greetings. My name is Ramesses II, but history often remembers me as Ramesses the Great. My story begins in the golden land of Egypt, a world of gods, pharaohs, and monumental pyramids. I was born into the royal family around the year 1303 BCE. My father was the great Pharaoh Seti I, a powerful and wise ruler who understood the weight of the crown. From my earliest days, he was my teacher, showing me the duties of a king, from leading armies to honoring the gods. He saw potential in me, and when I was about fourteen years old, around 1289 BCE, he named me Prince Regent. This was no empty title; I was given true authority and responsibility. My father was preparing me to one day rule all of Egypt, to wear the double crown that symbolized the unity of our two lands, Upper and Lower Egypt.

In the year 1279 BCE, my father, Seti I, completed his journey on Earth and passed into the afterlife. It was my time to become pharaoh. I ascended to the throne with a great ambition burning within me: I wanted to make Egypt more powerful, more prosperous, and more magnificent than it had ever been before. I did not rule alone. By my side was my Great Royal Wife, the beautiful and intelligent Nefertari. To me, she was more than just a queen; she was my most trusted advisor and confidant, and her wisdom helped guide many of my decisions. In the early years of my reign, I focused on securing our kingdom. I led my armies on several military campaigns to strengthen Egypt's borders, sending a clear message to the neighboring empires that a strong and determined new pharaoh was now in charge.

My strength as a ruler was put to its greatest test in the year 1274 BCE. The powerful Hittite Empire challenged my control over the strategic lands of Kadesh, and I knew I could not let this stand. I marched my army to face them in what would become known as the Battle of Kadesh. The Hittites were clever and set a cunning trap. Their chariots smashed into my forces, and for a moment, it seemed my army would be completely defeated. Surrounded and facing disaster, I called upon the great god Amun for strength. A surge of courage filled me, and I personally led a desperate charge, rallying my men and driving back the enemy. I turned the tide of the battle, saving myself and my soldiers from destruction. I returned to Egypt not in defeat, but as a hero. To ensure no one would ever forget my bravery, I commanded that the story of my victory at Kadesh be carved in stone on the walls of temples throughout my kingdom.

After years of conflict, I came to realize that a lasting peace could be more valuable than any victory in battle. Around the year 1258 BCE, I made a historic decision. I met with the leaders of the Hittite Empire and together we signed a peace treaty, the first of its kind ever recorded in history. This agreement brought an era of stability and prosperity to our lands. With Egypt safe from war, I could finally turn my full attention to my greatest passion: building. I wanted to leave a legacy that would last for eternity. I commissioned the construction of a grand new capital city, Pi-Ramesses. I built a massive mortuary temple for myself, the Ramesseum, filled with towering statues. But my most incredible works were the temples at Abu Simbel. Two enormous temples were carved directly out of a mountain cliffside. The larger one was dedicated to the gods and to myself, while the beautiful smaller temple was a tribute to my beloved wife, Nefertari.

My time as pharaoh was long and eventful. I ruled over Egypt for 66 years, one of the longest reigns in the history of our great civilization. I had many children who would continue my royal line for generations. I lived to be about 90 years old, and my journey on this earth came to an end around the year 1213 BCE. Though my life ended, my story did not. Thousands of years later, people still know my name and call me 'Ramesses the Great.' The colossal statues, towering temples, and detailed carvings I left behind still stand under the Egyptian sun, telling the story of a golden age and of the pharaoh who built for eternity.
