The story

Rembrandt van Rijn

Hello! My name is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. I was born in a town called Leiden in the Netherlands on July 15th, 1606. My father was a miller, and we lived near a windmill. My parents hoped I would become a scholar, so around the year 1620, they sent me to the famous University of Leiden. But books and lectures weren't for me. My true passion was art! I loved to draw everything I saw. I begged my parents to let me follow my dream, and they finally agreed to let me study to become a painter.

Beginning around 1621, I became an apprentice to a painter in my hometown, where I learned the basics of mixing paints and preparing canvases. But I wanted to learn more! In 1625, I traveled to the big city of Amsterdam to study with a famous artist named Pieter Lastman. He painted grand scenes from history and the Bible, and he taught me how to tell a story in a single picture. After about six months, I returned to Leiden and opened my own art studio with my friend, Jan Lievens. We were young, excited, and ready to paint!

In 1631, I decided to move to Amsterdam for good. It was a bustling, wealthy city, and my art quickly became popular. Wealthy merchants and important people wanted me to paint their portraits. It was there I met the love of my life, Saskia van Uylenburgh. We were married in 1634. She was my greatest inspiration, and I painted and drew her many times. In 1632, I created one of my first famous paintings, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. It showed a real science lesson, and it was so different from the stiff, formal portraits people were used to seeing.

I loved experimenting with light and shadow. Artists call this technique 'chiaroscuro.' I would make one part of a painting shine with bright light, while other parts disappeared into deep, dark shadows. This made my paintings feel alive and full of emotion. In 1642, I finished my biggest and most famous work. Its official title is very long, but everyone knows it as The Night Watch. It was a huge portrait of a group of city guards. Instead of having them stand still in a line, I painted them moving, talking, and getting ready for action. It was like a snapshot from a movie!

Life was not always easy. The same year I finished The Night Watch, 1642, my beloved Saskia passed away. It was a time of great sadness. Of our four children, only our son, Titus, lived to become an adult. Later in my life, I also had money troubles. I loved collecting art and other interesting objects, and I spent more than I earned. In 1656, I had to sell my house and many of my precious belongings. But even when things were difficult, I never stopped painting. In fact, some of my most famous and emotional self-portraits come from this time. I painted what I felt inside, honestly and without hiding anything.

I continued to paint and teach for the rest of my days, always trying new things. I lived to be 63 years old and passed away in Amsterdam in the autumn of 1669. Today, people from all over the world come to see my paintings in museums. I am remembered as one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. I hope that when you look at my art, you see not just the people and stories I painted, but the feelings inside them, all brought to life with a little bit of light and a lot of shadow.
