Just want René Magritte?
Hello! My name is René Magritte, and I was a painter who loved to fill my canvases with mystery and wonder. I was born a long, long time ago, on November 21st, 1898, in a country called Belgium. Even as a little boy, I saw the world differently than other people. I thought ordinary things, like a piece of fruit or a hat, were full of secrets. I started drawing and painting when I was just 12 years old. It was my favorite way to show people the wonderful and strange pictures I had in my head.
When I grew up, I went to a special art school in a city called Brussels. I learned all the rules of painting, but I decided it was much more fun to make my own! I became part of an art style called Surrealism. That's a big word that means we painted pictures that looked like they came from a dream. I also met a wonderful woman named Georgette Berger, and we got married in 1922. She was my best friend. In my paintings, I loved to surprise people. I would paint a train puffing out of a fireplace, or men in dark suits and bowler hats raining from the sky. My art wasn't meant to be scary, but to make you think and maybe even giggle.
One of my most famous paintings shows a wooden pipe, the kind a person might smoke. But underneath it, I wrote in French, 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe,' which means 'This is not a pipe.' People would look at it and get so confused! They'd say, 'But it is a pipe!' I would explain that it wasn't a real pipe at all—it was just a painting of a pipe! You couldn't hold it or use it. This was my little game to show that pictures and real things are different. It was my way of making people think about the amazing world of art and ideas.

I spent my whole life painting my picture-puzzles and sharing my daydreams with the world. I lived to be 68 years old. Today, my paintings are in big museums all over the globe, and people still scratch their heads and smile when they see them. I hope my art reminds you that the world is full of magic and that you should always look closely. After all, everything we see is hiding something else!
